Featured Couple: Irene & Mike

“The couple that sweats together, stays together.”

For the month of February, we’ll be featuring the Lovebirds of Community Fitness … those couples whose benches are always parallel in BodyPump or who spend Saturday mornings sharing Cycling stats. Whether their go-to is cutthroat competition or friendly encouragement, they’ll tell you there’s something truly special about working out with the person you love.

Now introducing couple #8 … Irene & Mike! 


How long have you been together? 

We have been married 37 years. Irene is a retired high school teacher and Mike is a retired security risk and compliance manager. Irene joined Community Fitness five years ago and Mike joined when he retired a year ago.

What are your favorite Community Fitness classes? 

Irene loves taking Zumba classes with Daniel, Daren, and Jennifer. Mike takes Yoga with Lasara and Tai Chi with Deborah. We work out together in BodyPump.

What do you like about working out together? 

Our goal is to maintain and build muscle and bone strength as we age.

How would you describe your in-class dynamic? 

Our dynamic in class is one of support and encouragement as well as mindfulness in avoiding injury. We don’t compete with each other.

How would you describe your in-class dynamic? 

Outside of class, we love to travel and spend lots of time with friends and family, especially our 1.5  year-old granddaughter. Mike is a published writer and is working on a mystery novel. Irene works as an assistant at PCC Cooks.
