“If you don’t fail now and again, it’s a sign you’re playing it safe.” Woody Allen
Matt’s lifetime professions in pharmacy, personal fitness training, health education and gerontology were all stepping stones toward being a yoga teacher. After completing these careers, he decided to devote his life to teaching yoga. As a student he delved into the world of yoga in the 1970Ss and began his training in the Viniyoga lineage. Since then Matt has been certified by Baron Baptiste and taken numerous workshops with other masters.
Based on principles of being present and honoring one’s individual strengths as well as limitations, Matt’s classes offer possibilities of increased balance, flexibility and wellbeing. Classes emphasize deep breathing as poses (asanas) flow into each other—almost like a dance. Combining his many years as a yoga student with a wide variety of teaching styles, Matt is able to tailor each class to fit the needs and wants of the students.
In April 2011 Matt had a heart attack and triple bypass surgery. He received an enormous outpouring of prayers, well-wishes and love during the next few months. Not only has he recovered rapidly and completely, but feels his entire view of life has been altered. “I believe that this was a dramatic way to let me know that my heart wasn’t as open to giving and receiving love as much as I thought it was. Every day, every moment, every opportunity I have to be with my students is precious!”
“The work that I do on and off the mat is ongoing; a continual practice that is always evolving, always transforming, and always bringing me into a deeper place and understanding of myself and my students.”
A little known fact about Matt is that he was a Poison Specialist (“Mr. YUK”) with the Washington Poison Center.
