Voted Seattle’s Best Fitness Studio ~ Seattle Magazine
Welcome to Pilates at Community Fitness gym in Seattle, where we’ve been doing a variety of Mat Pilates classes at our health club since 2006. If you’re looking for a way to improve your posture, strengthen your core and create a stronger foundation for physical health & wellness in general, a consistent Pilates practice is a good way to get there.
There’s so much more to this popular format than the oversimplified “lengthening and strengthening” phrase often used to promote the image of a long, lean and sculpted physique. Whether you’ve been practicing Pliates at a studio near you for years, or are just starting a new group exercise program at our Seattle gym, everyone can enjoy the benefits of Pilates classes, regardless of gender, age or ability.
With countless variations, Pilates incorporates simple yet challenging movements that are very effective when performed correctly. Developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century, Pilates combines physical movement with breath to work the smaller and deeper stabilizing muscles in the body. At our studios Pilates is a low impact group exercise format that aligns the body while creating optimal strength through muscle balance and neuromuscular patterning. Often used at health clubs across the nation for cross-training, injury prevention and/or rehabilitation purposes (1), Pilates incorporates whole body exercises to improve upper body, lower body and core strength. You’ll increase mobility while developing functional movement patterns that will help you tackle your daily activities with more freedom and less pain.
If you want to get your heart rate up a little and have some fun, check out our Pop Pilates classes paired with popular music to keep you motivated and moving to the beat. Stop by our Seattle gym today. If you live in the Roosevelt, Green Lake, Ravenna, View Ridge or U-District neighborhood, we’re located near you! Whether you have specific goals you want to reach, or just want to feel more flexible and fit, we have everything you need to get moving on a schedule that works for you.
If you don’t live nearby or can’t make it into the studio as frequently as you’d like, our health offers virtual class options both live and on demand. We’ve eliminated the need to search endlessly on YouTube for the right video. Instead, browse by category through our curated collection of easy-to-follow videos. Our online library allows you to experience the benefits of in-studio classes from the comfort of your home. Catch up on weekly Pilates classes offered in our Seattle gym. New group exercise classes are added weekly so every workout will feel new and exciting! No commitments are necessary as you can start streaming classes right now for free!
Since 2006, our health club has offered the best selection of Group exercise classes and instructors in the Pacific Northwest. We’re conveniently located in the center of Seattle, near the Greenlake, Wallingford, Wedgewood and Ravenna neighborhoods – just two blocks from Whole Foods on 65th and Roosevelt. Our gym is equipped with a pandemic air exchange system, twenty tons of heating and cooling power for climate control, wood sprung floors, two large screen TV’s on either side of the instructor stage, colored LED mood lighting and audio surround sound with acoustical treatments.

Pilates in general, is good for everyone, from beginners to professional athletes. Clients can sometimes feel a bit intimidated by the serious atmosphere and large spring-loaded machines in a traditional Pilates studio. At our Community Fitness gym in Seattle we do Mat Pilates classes without the big equipment. Our group exercise classes build in a progressive manner starting with the basics and working toward more advanced exercises.
Our Seattle health club offers exercises for all levels with options to modify, making your workouts safe and effective. Of course you should always listen to your body and make the workout your own. Control is a concept you’ll hear of in our Pilates classes, stabilizing certain parts of the body while moving others. You may want to keep your range of motion smaller when first starting out as quality is definitely more important than quantity.
Pilates is a total body exercise focusing on core muscles such as lower back, abdominals, glutes, hips, inner thighs, and the pelvic floor. Targeting the smaller underutilized stabilizing muscles that support the joints, you’ll still get a great workout but your muscles might feel like they’re being used in a new way. It’s a unique group exercise format and if you’ve never been to a Mat Pilates class at our gym before some of the instructor cues might sound a bit foreign.. but don’t worry, you’ll become familiar with the terminology quickly. Join us with an open mind and with consistency you’ll start to reap the benefits and move through life with greater ease, power, flexibility and vitality.
On the road? Get all the benefits of a professionally led Pilates class without the hassle without the commute. Hone your skills and deepen your practice whenever you have time! Don’t add stress trying to make it to the studio while juggling your busy workday. There are no commitments and you can cancel anytime. Stream Pilates classes today for free with our health club’s 7-day free virtual trial and enjoy the benefits of restoration, mindful movement therapy and optimal health!
A variety of specific Pilates programs exist for special populations such as older adults, those with injuries or low bone density and people who are pregnant too. At Community Fitness gym in Seattle, we offer different group exercise workouts to suit your needs. Our health club offers Mat Pilates and Pop Pilates classes in-studio and online you’ll find additional offerings such as Core & More and Sideways Pilates (otherwise known as prenatal Pilates). It’s good to always consult your healthcare provider when starting a new fitness program.
Starting a Pilates practice at our Seattle gym is simple and easy. Just bring yourself. Our health club provides all the equipment you’ll need. Most of the time, all you’ll need is a mat and towel, but additional props may be used in class for support, exercise variety and/or to increase and decrease intensity levels. In a Pilates class at our Roosevelt studio you may use equipment such as magic circle, light weights, a miniball and therabands.
As with any group exercise program, consistency is key. Working out two to three times a week, at our gym in Seattle, is great but listen to your body and aim to find a rhythm that feels right for you. Everyday is different and as you progress so will your self-awareness and you’ll intuitively know what your body needs. All Pilates exercises can be modified to meet you where you‘re at. Let us help you build more balanced strength, flexibility and physical vitality to support you in your daily activities.
If in-person classes make you nervous or if our Seattle gym isn’t located near you, then you’ll definitely benefit from our studio’s virtual class offering. No. Community Fitness gym in Seattle is no longer requiring all clients attending in-studio group exercise classes to be vaccinated. All clients, vaccinated and unvaccinated, are welcome at our health club.
As of March 12, 2022 and in accordance with WA State and King County mandates, masks at our Seattle gym are now OPTIONAL.
Since reopening our Seattle gym in March, 2021, our studios have been at 25%, 50% and currently remain at 75% of pre-covid capacities. We also have client workout stations marked on the floor, for social distancing purposes. However, the most important thing our health club has done for client safety is the installation of our new fresh air exchange system.
Studio air is now replaced with fresh outdoor air every 6 minutes (10 times an hour). Exhaled CO2 is a Covid risk proxy for indoor, and partially enclosed outdoor, spaces (Read more). With our new fresh air exchange system, average CO2 levels in class are around 450 parts per million (ppm).
For some comparison, Seattle and other major urban areas across the U.S., have outdoor CO2 levels measuring around 400 ppm. And previous WA State Open Air and Outdoor Seating Requirements use 450 ppm as a safety benchmark for CO2 levels. Read more
Wherever you’re currently working, especially when taking group exercise classes, be informed and ask your gym what the CO2 levels are within their facility.

You’ve heard it said that body weight is regulated by diet and exercise. Another common weight loss related phrase is “calories in vs. calories out”. It’s true that if your caloric consumption (diet) isn’t lower than your caloric expenditure (exercise), you simply won’t lose weight.
Diet / nutrition is key to losing weight, because an increase in exercise also leads to an increase in appetite. So taking a ton of group exercise classes at our Seattle gym won’t help you achieve a daily caloric deficit if you’re eating more as a result.
Because changing your eating habits can be challenging, keeping your diet (daily caloric intake) the same and changing (increasing) your in-studio or online fitness regime is generally considered a good game plan. Plus, with an increase in physical activity comes a host of additional mental, emotional and physiological benefits beyond just weight loss.
Losing weight is a matter of caloric consumption vs. expenditure. Whether you’re working out in our Seattle gym or doing online fitness at home, calorie burn will depends on factors like intensity, duration, and your weight. But generally speaking, Cardio will burn more calories in a single session. However, weight training increases muscle mass and the more muscle you have, the more calories you’ll burn at rest. This means your body will burn more calories over time, including when you’re sleeping or sitting at your desk. So a fitness program that has both cardio and strength training will maximize caloric expenditure. For more information on this topic check out this Healthline article.
