How To Stay On Top Of Your Fitness Routine While On Vacation
It’s no secret that a vacation can be a fantastic way to destress and refocus on what matters to you, but it can also derail your fitness routine! Even some of the most dedicated exercisers struggle with finding balance and sticking to their workout program when away from home.
However, we think that travel doesn’t have to mean you completely abandon your healthy habits. There are plenty of ways to fit exercise time in when away from home, and we’ve got some tips to help you and give you a couple of ideas for vacation workouts that will keep you on track!
Vacation Workouts You Can Do Anywhere And Tips To Keep You On Track
Are you one of the many who worries about losing progress or motivation while on vacation? We’re right there with you! That’s why we came up with some ideas to help you stay fit and still enjoy your holiday.
Before we begin, we want to state right up front that you probably won’t be able to fit in your regular workouts, and that’s perfectly OK! You’re allowed to rest and relax and treat yourself during your vacation. But, we want to help you stay on track if that’s what you’re looking for.
Use The Stairs and Walk Where You Can
One easy tip while traveling is to skip the elevator and take the stairs! This could mean your hotel or museums, anywhere there’s an opportunity. These are a great calorie-burner and can help your glutes throughout your entire vacation.
If possible, try to skip the cabs and trolleys during your tours and take the scenic root! There’s no better way to take in the sights and surprises of the place you’re visiting (and get your steps in!) than on foot.
Play With The Kids
One easy way to work out on vacation is to play with your kids! Kids are full of energy, and they can run around or swim for hours and hours. Play Marco Polo with them or basketball. Engage in a game of tag or rent bikes with your kids. Chances are, they’ll love being able to spend quality time with you, and you’ll have fun too and not even notice all the calories you’re burning.
Plan Movement Opportunities Into Every Day
Do you operate better on a schedule? Plan your workouts while you’re planning the rest of your vacation. If you’ve booked the morning full of tours and events, block out an hour in the afternoon to get a bit of aerobic adventure in. Plan a beach walk, hit the hotel gym, or sign up for a day pass at a local fitness center.
Get More Steps At The Airport
You can maximize every second of your vacation if you set your mind to it, even at the airport! Don’t sit while you’re waiting to board; instead, take a few laps up and down the terminal. Even just fifteen minutes of fast-paced walking can burn more calories than you think and help you work off nervous energy. If applicable, take the kids with you and play an I-Spy game while walking to keep them entertained and happy while you wait.
Keep A Full Body Workout Handy
When you’re on vacation, it seems like the only available workout is a run because it’s free, and you’re likely packing weights with you in your suitcase. But we think you should have a reliable bodyweight workout handy that you can perform in your room, the hotel gym, or even at the park!

Look For Hotels WIth Gyms or Pools
Another way to get your vacation workouts is to book hotels with fitness centers and pools. If you’re dedicated, you can sneak out early and get a great workout before the day begins! Starting your day with a healthy choice will help you continue to make healthy choices throughout the rest of the day.
Prepare Snacks
A great tip to help you stay on track and keep those healthy habits going is to pack some healthy snacks before you go. Especially if you’re expecting a long car ride, pack some filling and healthy snacks so that you aren’t forced to eat at fast-food places or gas stations along the way.
Find Restaurants That Are Within Walking Distance From Your Hotel
Depending on where you’re at, you can work off some of those vacation meals if you walk to and from the restaurants you’re eating at. Also, walking after a meal is a great way to keep your blood sugar levels down and make you feel like you’ve earned those tasty treats!
Have Fun and Be Creative
Our last tip for vacation workouts is to try to have fun! Get creative with your fitness. Golfing and tennis count as exercise! Paddleboarding and swimming count too. Whatever activity has you up and moving around should be counted as a workout. If you take a little time and do a little research ahead of time, you can find a myriad of fitness opportunities. A local hike, dancing at a bar, volleyball on the beach, white water rafting — is your heart rate up? Are you having fun? Count this as a win in the fitness department!
Conclusion For Vacation Workouts
When you’re on vacation, you’re likely not going to have as much time or motivation to get your full regular workout in. Remember that doing something is a whole lot better than doing nothing. You should be proud even if you just get 50% of your normal routine!
