Dance classes at our Seattle studio are designed to get everyone feeling comfortable on the dance floor. Regardless of age, gender, dance experience or fitness level, our dance classes will help you feel safe to let loose and discover greater self-confidence through exercise. Don’t worry if you haven’t danced in years, or at all for that matter. Our priority is providing a friendly, supportive environment at our local gym serving the Roosevelt, Green Lake, Ravenna, U-District neighborhoods and more.
Whether you’re a beginning dancer or a professional, these classes are for those who love to dance! Expect to be challenged and inspired with lots of footwork, arm work, sexiness, self-empowerment, booty-shakin’, self-expression and laughs! All levels are welcome and encouraged to move at their own pace. You’ll learn more each time you participate.
A typical cardio dance class, at our Seattle studio, will start with a dynamic warm up, followed by easy-to-follow dance routines set to the hottest songs of yesterday and today. Sing along to top forty, pop, club hits and hip-hop as you body roll & booty pop your way to your fitness goals. Intensity levels will vary by format, but all of our dance fitness sessions provide highly addictive cardio fun while challenging both the body and brain.
We suggest wearing comfortable clothing to the gym, that you can move in and athletic shoes that don’t have too much grip (a bigger tread can sometimes make it difficult to pivot or turn quickly). You can expect a quick warm up, followed by upbeat songs you can’t help but dance to. Just keep moving and before you know it, you’ll feel the rhythm of class and wonder where the time went!
Community Fitness gym knows dance. And we offer a huge selection dance fitness classes in our Seattle studio on Roosevelt Way NE. Formats like Dance Club and Dance Fitness are more explosive. No matter which format you choose, you’ll find a health club to be a safe place to be playful, feel comfortable in your body, and build community.

My first experience in a dance fitness class at CFit was fun and challenging. As a new client, I felt very welcome and immediately knew I was going to come back. I found myself motivated by all the participants, the fabulous instructors and the good energy they foster in class. The new songs and choreography keep me feeling inspired, energetic and sweaty! I love that get to set aside a hour out of my day… just for me, to workout and have fun. I can’t stress enough how talented and amazing the instructors are. Nathalye, Jennifer, Kat, Medora, Nanave, Daniel and Quande… Community Fitness has the very BEST in town. I would encourage anyone to try an in-person class, a special event or check out the on demand dance classes from home.

Community Fitness is more than a Gym or workout facility, it’s a gathering place for friends, fellowship and a lot of laughs! I feel the staff and the instructors are all inspirational leaders in the industry. I began my membership with Community Fitness about 3 years ago, prior to the pandemic, because I found out my favorite dance instructor was there, Medora Cesarano. Honestly, the joy and ‘frolic’ that exists in just that one hour is THE MOST addictive and magical experience I’ve ever had the pleasure of stumbling into. She is a master of mixing her humor, inclusiveness and inviting personality together with her long amassed dance experience creating an exhilarating, high-energy, commune-style festival of friends, family and comaraderie. I can’t wait to get to every class, I don’t mind the drive, I wouldn’t miss it for the world!
Community Fitness also provides access to expertly filmed live classes AND an online fitness video library which gives the global community the ability to tune into the magic, no matter when or where!
I have been dancing with many amazing instructors at Community Fitness for the past 9 years and absolutely love the positive vibe that happens with every instructor and the staff. I have met lifelong friends and know that when I attend a class at CFit I will be sweaty and happy. From beginner to advanced training, they have it all. I was especially impressed with the quick adjustment to the quarantine and found streaming classes within weeks so that I could keep moving. Thanks Community Fitness for being a GREAT part of the community!!

I’ve been a regular at Community Fitness since 2015, and cannot imagine a more fun and welcoming studio. From the very first time I visited, I felt the incredible vibe that comes from being connected to others, moving to music, and working it out. Each instructor is unique, but they all have that “It Factor” that makes you want to work out with them. They’re committed to your well-being, and empower every student in every class to dive into the movement with joy (and good form!) — whether it’s cardio-based, strength training, or yoga. I’ve also made incredible friends along the way, who support me, encourage me, and make me laugh. This is truly my fitness family. I’m bummed when I can’t make it to class — I’ve never had that feeling about any other gym or studio.

I want to express how much I love your team at Community Fitness. Medora specifically, saved my life during the pandemic. My friends Leah and Carrie live in Seattle and have taken classes from you for years and during the pandemic they told me about your gym and the new virtual classes you were offering. So even though I live in Virginia, I have been a member of your online dance fitness classes and dancing with Medora & Dance Club since 2020. These classes changed my life and allowed me to feel so strong and so powerful because they are such a hard workout! Not to mention she is so inclusive in her class, allows other attendees to dance with her on stage, and has such positive messages to share with everyone each class. Thank you to your whole organization during the pandemic and beyond as you help support wellness and fitness for all. I could not love Community Fitness anymore than I do now!!!

Yes! Most Dance Fitness classes at our gym are geared for “All Levels” and suitable for beginners. Typically, this exercise format uses simple choreography so participants can watch and follow along, in real time, with little breakdown needed. It can take a few songs to get into the groove, but as long as you’re having fun, it doesn’t matter if you’re doing the choreography perfectly.
This is especially true if you’re doing a Livestream or On Demand Dance Fitness class at home. Tuning in online for a virtual dance class is a great way to learn some moves and get your confidence up before stepping into the studio.
The choreography will not necessarily be easier, but Dance Fitness formats that incorporate Latin dance styles or Burlesque choreography will be lower impact than formats that utilize Hip-hop and Pop music and movements.
Dancing is a wonderful fitness modality with a wide range of health benefits for people of all ages, shapes and size. Physical and mental benefits include:
Burn calories by doing high-energy dance workouts in the studio or on demand at home. A 2012 study of 19 female Zumba participants ages 18 to 22 burned an average 369 total calories in a 39-minute class.
Dancing with a group can create a sense of community and help you feel more connected to other people. The creative and collaborative nature of dance can provide personal and social benefits including:
Traditional Dance: The primary focus of a traditional dance class is to teach or learn a specific style of dance. The beginning of class is spent warming up and learning technique, followed by a choreographed routine which the instructor will breakdown and repeat. The combination of moves are typically introduced slowly at first, building in length and speed.
Dance Fitness: A generic term for any dance class with the intention of maximizing cardiovascular fitness and caloric expenditure, Dance Fitness is a full body aerobic workout which usually takes place in a group exercise setting. This exercise format utilizes simple, easy-to-follow dance choreography, usually incorporating both hi and low-impact movements and can be set to any genre of music. Participants follow along watching and mimicking the instructor with little breakdown of the dance moves.
You’ve heard it said that body weight is regulated by diet and exercise. Another common weight loss related phrase is “calories in vs. calories out”. It’s true that if your caloric consumption (diet) isn’t lower than your caloric expenditure (exercise), you simply won’t lose weight.
Diet / nutrition is key to losing weight, because an increase in exercise also leads to an increase in appetite. So taking dance fitness classes in a gym, or doing a ton of on demand dance fitness workouts at home, won’t help you achieve a daily caloric deficit if you’re eating more as a result.
Because changing your eating habits can be challenging, keeping your diet (daily caloric intake) the same and changing (increasing) your exercise regime is generally considered a good game plan. Plus, with an increase in physical activity comes a host of additional mental, emotional and physiological benefits beyond just weight loss.
Losing weight is a matter of caloric consumption vs. expenditure. Whether your taking strength training classes in a gym, or doing on demand cardio dance fitness workouts at home, calorie burn will depend on factors like intensity, duration, and your weight. But generally speaking, Cardio will burn more calories in a single session. However, weight training increases muscle mass and the more muscle you have, the more calories you’ll burn at rest. This means your body will burn more calories over time, including when you’re sleeping or sitting at a desk. A fitness program that has both cardio and strength training will maximize caloric burn. Dance as a form of exercise has been around at least since the 1960’s when Kenneth H. Cooper pioneered the benefits of doing aerobic exercise for maintaining and improving health. In 1966 he coined the term Aerobics and published a best-selling book by the same name in 1968, which emphasized a point system for improving the cardiovascular system.
Aerobic dancing was said to be invented by Jacki Sorensen in 1969, inspired by Cooper’s book. Around the same time, Judi Missett created Jazzercise and was franchising dance studios in the U.S. In the 1970’s and 80’s aerobic workouts videos were made popular by fitness personalities like Jane Fonda and Richard Simons.
Dance Fitness as we know it today came to be with the creation of ZUMBA, which started in Miami in 1999 and spread across the nation and onto most continents by 2007. ZUMBA dominated the group fitness industry for about a decade giving birth to innumerable offshoots, the most popular utilizing Pop / Hip-hop music and dance styles.
Dance Fitness remains one of the most popular group exercise formats. It has not only widened the mass appeal of group fitness within the fitness industry, but has also inspired countless number of fitness enthusiasts to get certified and become instructors.
